Low-Tech Assistive Technology Tools

February 24, 2016

I often write about high tech tools because they are a constantly evolving, exciting domain.  However, too often we neglect the age-old, low tech tools that can support students in their educational and workplace settings. You can find my latest article on the Yellin Center Blog, or down below. Enjoy! Continue reading “Low-Tech Assistive Technology Tools”

Tin foil painting // tin foil adds an unique sensory experience to a traditional activity. The sound and texture of the tin foil adds a little something. I wrapped the tin foil around some cardboard recycle just to make it a little more sturdy for whatever a toddler decides to throw at it. Then put out some paint and get creating!
3 year milestone: 2-3 step instructions
Snow painting // WE GOT SNOW. We never get snow. And we got SO much snow. So this morning (at 8am as @ecgemelas pointed out) because parenthood 🤷‍♀️ we found some bottles (spray bottles, squirting water bottles, even water guns would work) and filled them with water and food colouring. I did the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) so that we could mix them and make the secondary colours if we wanted l (green, purple, and orange). It was a BLAST.
Dino Habitat Invitation to Play // we love Dinos. So I set out some blue, green and black play dough, some stones, wooden cones and some small Dinos he was gifted. Anderson used his creativity to set up the world, honed his communication skills as he directed me in what to do, and grew his imagination as he played.
Early Literacy & Language Strategy: make it personal
symmetry hearts (for simple DIY valentines) // so a little art and a little numeracy development with these super simple valentines. I cut hearts out of cardstock, we put a little @crayola_canada poster paint on one side, folded in half and smushed. Then we opened them up to see the symmetrical pattern they created. Anderson will be handing them out to all his little preschool friends. I used to do this activity in my classroom. If you’re a teacher looking for more symmetry art & math activities, I also have symmetry drawings up on my @teacherspayteachers store!
